Year 12 Outdoor Education Course

Conditions of Involvement

A student who has enrolled in this course for the year is required to accept the conditions under which the course operates and have their parents/guardians approval to participate. Please carefully read the conditions outlined below and explained in class and if you wish to continue with the course sign the copy given to you in class, get your parents/guardians to sign it and return it to your teacher.

1. Due to the predominant nat** of the course and the need to travel off campus, lunch and after school maybe. Students will be notified of this beforehand.

2. Due to the practical components of the course most sessions will require students to bring appropriate clothing and equipment to change into and use. A fail** to bring this will exclude a student being involved and repeated fail** will result in a student being removed from the class. A lack of appropriate equipment will on occasions make activities dangerous for themselves and the rest of the group.

3. For the course students will need access to good quality mountain bike because Term Two is Mountain Biking. A bike can be hired from the school. Skiing equipment will also help in Term Three as we are off to Ohau ski field for three days. It is not intended that students have to purchase equipment, but they need to be s** they have access to borrowing or hiring this equipment before starting the course.

4. The course uses some outside instructors and venues and will often require students being transported to sites in and around Dunedin. So there is a cost of $350.00 for the year, plus the optional skiing trip. Students will be excluded from involvement until payment is made each term or the school has been contacted to make alternative arrangements.

5. The purpose of the course as outlined is to complete a number of industry based standards from the Qualifications Framework so students gain qualifications toward possible fut** study and careers. The standards offered are a mixt** of level 2 units which total 27 credits over the year. These credits count toward NCEA Level 2 and so successful completion of these is a focus of the course.

6. Some of the activities covered in this course will involve an element of risk. All possible steps will be taken to remove or control this however students and parents/guardians need to be aware of this before entering the course.

7. Students who suffer from medical conditions that may effect their participation in some activities will need to disclose these on the relevant forms so staff and instructors are aware prior to the start of the course and can adjust activities where possible.

8. Due to the nat** of some activities students may have some concerns, and should feel free to discuss these first with the class teacher and if required the school’s Guidance Counsellor.

9. Throughout the course students will be presented with challenges necessary to pass assessments for the qualifications offered. All activities will operate on the basis of challenge by choice where the student has the final choice as to their level of participation. It must be noted that in the case of assessments against set standards a student who chooses to involve themselves below the required standard would not be able to pass the assessment.

10. Students must make themselves aware of the departments NCEA Rules – Student Information Sheet. This document fully explains the process of assessment for this course including absences from assessments and reassessment. This will be introduced to students in the first class lesson and a copy should be retained in their class folder.

11. There is also an Optional Ski trip in winter. This trip has 4 credits at level 2. With anything there is a cost of $326(2011 price). This is extra and I remind you that it is optional, but organised through Outdoor Education.

NCEA Rules – Student Information

This year you will be involved in NCEA studying for a series of internally assessed achievement standards/unit standards at level 2. This means you will be assessed throughout the year as each unit is completed. As such you need to be organised and familiar with how the following proced**s work within this department.

1. Reassessment

For each internal achievement standard you are assessed on you have the opportunity to be reassessed should you fail to achieve it, under the following guidelines.

Note: Practical internally assessed standards will only have one assessment time

· There will only be one opportunity for a reassessment of each achievement standard offered where it is possible to provide this

· Reassessment will be offered to students who did not gain achieved

· Reassessments may take one or more of the following formats:

- A task the same as the original task for practical work

- A similar yet different task for written assignments or written work

- A verbal reassessment. In some instances your teacher may reassess you verbally to find the evidence they need to pass you. In this instance the teacher will write your name on the paper and sign and date it

2. Appeals

When an assessed piece of work is returned to you by your teacher they will explain how the work was marked and how your grade was awarded. If you feel you have not been treated fairly you should follow these instructions:

· Within five days you need to see your teacher and discuss your concerns with them. This must be at a time that suits you both

· If you are not satisfied at this point you should contact the senior co-ordinator – Mr Frost – and collect an appeals form to fill out. You then take this to see the Head of the Department – Mr Cassidy

· If you are still not satisfied after this meeting your appeal will be referred to the Principal

3. Assessment Acceptance

At the conclusion of each unit of work your marked work will be returned to you and your teacher will go over it with you and explain how grades were awarded. At the conclusion of this if you are satisfied with your grade you are required to sign off the task by placing your signat** in the space provided and dating it. This will then be returned to your teacher.

4. Late Work or Missed Assessment

· Late work or missed assessments will not be accepted under any circumstances unless accompanied by an acceptable excuse as laid out below

· In the case of illness a medical certificate must be supplied wherever possible in advance of the due date

· In the case of medical excuse a student will complete a classroom based assessment at the next convenient classroom session

· Where no acceptable excuse is supplied a student may be offered the assessment opportunity when the rest of the class is offered the reassessment opportunity as outlined above. Only one assessment opportunity will then be available

5. Authentication of work

All work you hand in or assessed in this year must be your own. Any work handed in that is not yours will mean you automatically fail that achievement standard. To ens** your work is yours you will be required to fulfil some or all of the following depending upon the nat** of the work.

· Some written tasks will only be completed in class with your teacher present

· You may be required to sign a form and have your parents/guardians sign it as well to show it is your work

· You will be required to reference any written research work including web sites so teachers can check them

· You may be quizzed orally by your teacher to check you actually understand and know the work you have presented

· You may need to have a coach or parent sign a form as proof of practical work completed outside the school

6. Storage of Work

Upon completion your written work will be collected back in by your teacher and stored at school until all moderation is completed. Work will not be returned to you. Some will be retained for comparison against following year groups.

7. Extensions

This department will comply with the extensions policy laid down in the staff NCEA handbook.

General Information

Stationery

You will require a folder and refill paper to put your work into. This is recommended rather than an exercise book, as you will be given a lot of handouts, which will be easier put into a ring binder.

Clothing

It is expected that you change completely out of your school uniform into clothing appropriate for physical activity for each practical lesson. Wearing a school shirt is not acceptable. You will be told in advance when you will need to change so there should be no excuses for forgetting. A record will be kept of whether or not you bring the appropriate gear and this is used to help with assessment.

If you are unable to participate due to injury you will need to bring a note. However, I would prefer it if you brought your gear and did as much of the lesson as possible.

Participate and Assessment

If you miss an assessment activity you must bring a note to me explaining why you were not at school for it. If it is an unexplained absence you will fail the assessment.

If you miss general class work it is important that you get the notes and hand-outs that you missed so that you can still be fully prepared for any assessments.

Italics mean that the class is split between all three of these disciplines.

Rock Climbing has not been undertaken in the last two years because I could not source an instructor

The Total number of credits offered will vary dependant on how much is completed in class. This variation is unforeseeable because of the nat** of this course.
