COURSE INFORMATION: What You Need to Know About NCEA Level 1 Science (11CSI)

· There are 6 Achievement Standards.

· There are 24 Level 1 credits available.

· All 6 Achievement Standards are assessed internally (at school). A re-sit opportunity may be possible but is at the discretion of your teacher.

· The course involves 4 classroom periods a week.

· The minimum science qualification you need for most technical apprenticeships and Polytechnic Diploma courses is Level 2

· To PASS this course and have the opportunity to be considered for a Level 2 science subject you will need to gain AT LEAST 12 credits internally AND the internal(s) that relates to the subject(s) that you want to take in Year 12. i.e. Biology – must pass Microbes. Chemistry - must pass Properties of Metals. Physics – must pass Physics investigation AND Electricity.

· You will not be automatically be eligible for Level 2 Science courses, even if you pass this course, as there are no external exams. You will need permission from the Teacher in Charge of each subject.

If time permits, we may enter 1 external exam paper, which will be useful for those students who wish to be allowed to enrol in Level 2 Science subjects.

This course is being introduced this year by Mr Bennett and will replace the Certificate Science course in 2015.
